curated by Paola Tognon
Contemporary Locus 12 invites Kader Attia and Alvin Curran inside the former Albergo Diurno, a subterranean public bath occupying a circular area of 1200 mq at the heart of Centro Piacentiniano in Bergamo, that is part of the social memory of the city but was abandoned for 40 years.
The project by Kader Attia – (1970, France) lives and works between Berlin, Paris and Algiers – brings the concept of repair into the former Albergo Diurno: memory and its ability to repair the fractures of history are at the core of a series of installations and a film, Reflecting Memory, that granted Attia the last Duchamp Prize.
The site-specific work by composer, musician, artist and electronic music pioneer Alvin Curran – (1938, Providence) lives and works in Rome – departs from the evocative structure of the site. Concert for bathtub and orchestra is a live performance with several musicians and instruments, a score for multiple voices that will transform into a sound architecture inhabiting the former Albergo Diurno for the duration of the exhibition.
